About the Course

This course is designed to give you a work experience related to the various subfields of Geography, such as urban planning, environmental studies/science, community activism, social service provision, GIS, etc. It provides an opportunity for you to explore various career options and to develop networks and skills to help you succeed in the workplace. We try to match your interests with a placement. However, there are no guarantees about the type of placement you will receive. The placement will involve working one day a week through most of the school year(usually at the internship host's place of business, but this may not always be the case). You need to be able to dedicate 8 hours per week to the internship, and this can be all in one day or split, depending on your needs, and those of the host. You will be responsible for getting to the workplace. Placements may or may not be downtown, and some commuting may be required. You will not be paid for this work. However, you will have complete safety insurance coverage for the time you spend at your placement, and will receive academic credit. It is important that you conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times. The class will also meet a number of times throughout the academic year. We will have workshops on different careers in geography, on how to write resumes and prepare and conduct interviews, and other professional development topics. Students will also develop an essay that places your internship work in a broader scholarly context.
