I am currently recruiting MA students interested in broadly working on social, cultural, feminist and political geography.

I am also interested in recruiting students who are willing to work with me on my project, ""Creative Geographies of Islam and Muslims in Toronto"". This qualitative research project focuses on key visual art institutions in Toronto and explores the experiences of Muslim and Muslim-affiliated artists over the past couple of decades.

I welcome students that are interested to work in areas related to economic geography, such as the following: I. Interregional Inequality and Regional Development: Increasing interregional inequality is a driver of populist movements around the world, causing concern among social scientists. This research is based on the assumption that regional development depends on the ability to mobilize resources and networks at different spatial scales to stimulate collective engagement. II. Knowledge Generation over Distance: This stream of research is based on the assumption that the competitiveness of firms depends on their ability to engage in creating and circulating knowledge both within and beyond their regional environment. III. Cluster Evolution and Institutional Change: Regional development can be triggered by the establishment and growth of regional industry clusters. Related research is interested in (i) processes of how clusters emerge, (ii) the consequences of institutional change for cluster dynamics, (iii) the impact of cross-cluster networks.

I am actively seeking both MA and PhD students to work with me on research relating to innovative law and policy design and implementation with specific focus on plastics or aviation and climate change. 

I am recruiting MSc and PhD students to take part in ongoing research themes focused on lake ice and remote sensing. Preference is given to students with fieldwork experience in the Canadian High Arctic.

I welcome applications from students interested in feminist intersectional, anti-colonial and anti-racist approaches to the study of urban life, specifically with an interest in

a) experiences of work, social reproduction and employment in cities, particularly in Canada, India and the Gulf Cooperation Council or

b) the economies that sustain housing and real estate.

I welcome applications from students interested in examining urban forests and green infrastructure actors, policy and outcomes. I am particularly interested in students who would like to focus on private tree stewardship, including monitoring trees planted through yard tree initiatives; and environment justice concerns. I consider these topics from a socio-ecological systems perspective, emphasizing interactions among different actors, in light of environmental change and justice considerations.

The Stream and Wetland Ecohydrology Research Group seeks curious, motivated, and hard-working applicants at the MSc (2 spots) level to conduct original research in nutrient cycling, water flowpath dynamics, and heavy metal & salt abundance in restored ecosystems, urban streams, ponds, and wetlands. The primary focus of this year's target applications will be to study 

(1) the nutrient cycling and decomposition dynamics in aggregate quarries restored to grasslands, and

(2) the water balance and plant-water interactions in these restored grasslands. Research approaches are field-centric, with additional lab analysis and experimentation.

Applicants who enjoy working outdoors, in all weather conditions, and possess an attention to detail and patience in the lab are especially encouraged to apply. Intermediate-level chemistry is required for project (1) above, and intermediate level hydrology and/or ecology is required for project (2) above. I am actively recruiting graduate students interested in transportation geography, urban mobility, and the intersections of transportation, housing, climate, and equity. My research group combines quantitative analysis, survey methods, and policy engagement to address pressing urban challenges in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. Students will have the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams, collaborate with government and industry partners, and contribute to research with real-world policy impacts. I welcome inquiries from motivated students with backgrounds in geography, planning, engineering, or related social sciences.

I am willing to supervise graduate students who are intellectually and politically committed to Marxist thought, anti-colonial studies, feminist theory and allied philosophical traditions; and keen to pursue radical research on such topics as imperialism, colonialism, nationalism, urbanism, ideology, space, planning and design.

Fully-funded MSc and PhD positions are available at my Remote Sensing and Spatial Ecosystem Modeling laboratory (the RSSEM Lab). Candidates will develop new techniques for quantifying vegetation stress using the latest remote sensing technology. Some of the data will be collected using unmanned aerial vehicles carrying imaging sensors.

I look for students with the following qualifications: 1) sincere interest in remote sensing and vegetation ecology; 2) strong quantitative skills; 3) remote sensing skills, or the ability to learn them quickly; and 4) excellent oral and written communication skills in English. This year I am actively seeking PhD and, possibly, MA students who are interested in researching the political economy of land access and sustainable urban and peri-urban agriculture in the Toronto area. There might also be opportunities for students interested in the political economy of agrarian change, particularly in Latin American contexts.

I am recruiting strong students with experience in anti-colonial and Indigenous community engagement/creative practice/research methodologies/policy work in support of Indigenous jurisdiction and environmental governance, relationality and coexistence, including in urban spaces.

The Environmental and Aquatic Biogeochemistry group is welcoming applications for funded MSc and PhD opportunities from highly motivated students interested in understanding how environmental stressors such as pollutants (mercury, other metals, emerging organic pollutants) and climate change impact the health of northern/arctic watersheds. I welcome PhD and MSc students interested in studying environmental issues related to our atmosphere, biosphere, and/or interactions between them with advanced methods in remote sensing, model simulations, field experiments, and data analysis. I am seeking to recruit masters and doctoral students who are interested in pursuing research projects that firmly lie in one or more of these areas:

(1) affordable housing policy and development;

(2) gentrification and displacement;

(3) equitable development approaches;

(4) evictions and eviction prevention.

It is expected that prospective students will have a strong willingness to contribute to housing and eviction-related research projects and demonstrate  evidence of interest or past research on housing and planning-related issues that strongly align with the above areas.

Graduate students (MSc level) are being recruited for research in the area of urban agroecology.

Specifically, potential studies include those focused on crop responses to environmental change and growing conditions in urban agriculture systems (e.g., allotment gardens, community gardens, etc.).

Potential students should have a background in plant ecology, plant ecophysiology, and/ or sustainable agriculture.

Fully-funded MSc and PhD positions are available in Professor Mitchell's WATER (Watershed And Terrestrial Ecosystems Research) group.

Specifically, the group is beginning new research on freshwater security and hydrology in northern Nunavut, with an opportunity to conduct field work at Canadian Forces Station Alert. Students need to be able to obtain a reliability security clearance from the Department of National Defence and must have a strong desire for (safe) adventure in Canada's North. Opportunities include research in hydrology and spatial terrain analysis, including the use of boat and aerial unmanned vehicles with sensors such as LiDAR. My work generally focuses on city-building by and with communities and individuals who have historically marginalized from formal urban planning processes to both understand and learn from diverse practices of city-building as well as reinforce calls to make formal urban planning more equitable. I am open to working with students with a range of research interests generally centred around making cities more liveable, just, and sustainable places.

I am particularly keen to supervise projects that critically examine contemporary processes of peripheral urbanization, contested planning practices, legal mobilizations, and insurgent forms of planning, especially in Latin America and other comparative Global South contexts.

I'm recruiting graduate students (PhD in Geography and MA) for research on climate action, energy justice, and local governance. My research examines the interdisciplinary dynamics shaping energy system transformation, with particular attention to equity and justice considerations in the transition to fossil-free energy systems. Current projects are trying to understand how to make home energy upgrades accessible to households vulnerable to energy inequities. I'm also recruiting students who want to develop research projects related to community-led climate action and climate justice, as well as urban climate action and municipal greenhouse gas emission reduction governance.

I am recruiting Master's and Ph.D. students interested in GeoAI and space-time analysis of human mobility, geoprivacy, and environmental health, as well as modeling environmental exposures (e.g., green space, food environment, and noise exposure) and their effects on public health. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in GIS and spatial analysis (better with experience in statistics, spatial analysis, and programming). All graduate students will be funded with the University's base funding package. Additional RA stipend may be provided if applicable.
